In a tense climax, Thomas Nixon who was leading by half a point going into the final round, drew with Sam Williams ensuring himself at least a share of first prize. Matthew Harborne, after an exciting win on board 2 against Krunal Kahar's Trompovsky Attack, joined Thomas Nixon as joint leader.
This set up a thrilling final 5-minute blitz play-off game for the Ampleforth Trophy, a two-year Sixth Form Scholarship to Ampleforth College and a place in the British Championships at Torquay next summer.
In an electrifying atmosphere the play-off took place in the centre of an expectant crowd of players, parents, sponsors, press and organisers. The two players fired out the first few moves of a Spanish then in the middlegame Thomas gained the edge and looked as if he was heading for the title. Matthew played some rapid defensive moves and with both players having less than 20 seconds, Thomas realising that the ending might be drawn, hesitated and to the shock of the audience lost on time.
Congratulations to Thomas Nixon of St Pauls School, Barnes, West London and to the winner Matthew Harborne of Royal Grammar School, Guildford.

SIXTY of the best young chess talents in the country - boys and girls - will be drawn to Ampleforth College this month for the biggest prize in British chess.
The Ampleforth Junior Masters, held in its second year at the Catholic independent school in North Yorkshire, offers a first prize worth almost £18,000 including a two-year scholarship to attend the school's mixed sixth form as a boarder. A sixth form girls' boarding house was established this year.
The tournament is an invitation event for the UK's top-ranked Under 16 chess players, and in recognition of the quality of its entry and its rapidly established prestige, the winner will be awarded an automatic qualification for the 2002 British Chess Championship to be held in Torquay. It has prize money of £2000, half of it for the winner.
The event is designed to bring together the leading young chess talents of both sexes from across the United Kingdom. Forty-nine boys and 11 girls have accepted the challenge issued by the British Chess Federation and on October 25 will begin six rounds of games held over four days. If two or more players tie for first place, a blitz play-off will take place for the Ampleforth trophy and scholarship, and championship qualification.
Two of the girls are reigning British Champions and three have recently returned from representing England in the European Youth Championships in Greece. Three of the boys also competed in Greece, including Rafe Martyn who will be travelling from his home in Belgium in his quest for this prestigious title. Almost without exception the youngsters have already achieved county or international status and hold an impressive array of junior titles. Ezra Lutton is the current British Under 15 & 16 Champion and must be a strong contender for the Ampleforth title but will need to be at his best against the top seeds, Thomas Rendle, Rafe Martyn and Chris Dorrington. Last year's runner-up, Kenan Boztas will be hoping to go one better on this occasion from his 5th place ranking. Thomas Nixon is currently the leading U16 in the Terence Chapman Grand Prix and will hope to consolidate his position with a good result at Ampleforth but he will need to keep an eye on Ezra Lutton, Thomas Rendle and Kenan Boztas who are not far behind.
Peter Turner, Director of Junior Chess at the British Chess Federation, said: "In only its second year, the Ampleforth Junior Masters has established itself as the major championship for British juniors. This event, made possible by generous sponsorship from Ampleforth College, has proved a huge incentive to leading young players while giving them essential experience of top level competition."
Father Leo Chamberlain, Headmaster of Ampleforth, commented: "It is good to be able to give a meaningful boost to a sport that exercises the mind, and to welcome to Ampleforth a large number of brilliant young players from all parts of the country and all backgrounds. Here they find a school dedicated to the discovery of an individual's ability, be it academic, sporting or cultural, and while here, many with their families, share in a reflective and joyful atmosphere in which those abilities can flourish."
